As every month is Black History Month let us not forget the nearly 20,000 black Marines who went through Montford Point between 1942 through 1949. These men dedicated there lives to the preservation of a dream. American history is filed the stories of African American's who have served in varying capacities since the American Revolution. Marine Commandant during this period General Holcomb issued instructions for the recruitment of colored males which was to begin June 1942. The Corps organized segregated defense battalion of black males for boot camp training at Montford Point Camp adjacent to Camp Lejeune, NC. Many served as specialist, cooks, clerks, etc. and ultimately were trained in the defense battalions such as the 51st (organized in August 1942) and the 52nd (December 1943) serving in ammunition, anti-artillery units, combat support units.

African American's saw action defense battalions and support units in Saipan, Guam, Peleiu, Okinawa and Japan. In July 1948 Executive Order 9981 was enacted by President Harry Truman on the desegregation of the Armed Forces.

New first continue for the African American in the Corps and their legacy continues to be told.  So during this month continue to look into history and remember.......

The Montford Point Marine Association is a non-profit Veteran's organization who's mission is to perpetuate the legacy of the 1st African Americans who entered the United states Marine Corps circa 1942-1949 Montford Point New River, North Carolina. Since that time many Marines have crossed these sands and exemplified themselves with stellar careers both professionally and as Marines. Many of there stories are told in the publications which make up Marine folklore.

The base has since been renamed Camp Johnson, and currently houses the Montford Point Marine Museum,  a new state of the art training facility named after  "MGYSGT Brooks Gray" , a new roadway aptly named - which leads you to the Main Entrance and other areas of significance.

The purpose of the association within the local chapters is to support educational assistance programs, community service activities, veterans programs, work with our active duty and reserve military counterparts, families and to increase knowledge of this organization and the contributions made by those who braved a new frontier.
